We welcome the appointment of Mr. Lakhdar Brahimi as the new Joint Special Representative of the UN and the League of Arab States for Syria.
We wish every success to Mr. Brahimi in his new assignment. We believe that he will be able to make important contributions to the achievement of a peaceful democratic transition in Syria in accordance with the legitimate demands of the people, with his knowledge and experience in the field of international diplomacy. In this vein, as it was the case with his predecessor Mr. Kofi Annan, Turkey stands ready to fully co-operate with Mr. Lakhdar Brahimi too.
It is essential that the UN and all its institutions, in particular the Security Council, not to spare their support to Mr. Brahimi for the successful conclusion of this difficult task.
A mandate which is new and compatible with the current conditions will be required for Mr Brahimi to enable him to assist Syria in steering towards a brighter future.
